Fertility

Are there women in your life that you can discuss issues around fertility openly? Does your church provide places for dialogue about this subject?

The other part of this issue are those that wish to have children and cannot. That is my story. My husband and I went through every procedure to try to conceive children. It was ten long years of probing, time off work, heartache and disappointment. After all that, we felt we did not want to adopt - having our own biological child was our wish and since that did not happen, we trusted that God had other plans for us. It is amazing the responses you get...people assume you didn't want kids or that you are selfish. I appreciate the other postings that the church needs to embrace all women and pray that will be the case some day.

I, too, applaud these women who choose to live childless. I am sorry some feel like outcasts especially at their own church. I don't understand the argument "who will take care of you in your old age?" Care centers exist to relieve the burden of caring for our elderly. It takes wisdom and maturity to realize that you want to pursue your own interests without the distraction of children. Too many parents have children and still do as they please at their child's expense.

I have two children myself, but have the utmost respect and admiration for women who choose not to have children. They can often put their efforts into making the world a better place, which my children will appreciate, in ways that I simply don't have the time or energy for. I think it is time that the church recognize and embrace those adults who don't wish to be parents. They are making no less sacrifices and are no less blessed. And when you think about it, neither Jesus nor his apostles had any children, either!
