Do you have a positive body image?
As i was watching a national morning news show, I heard a blurb "Love your body at any age," and it piqued my interest. Sadly, for the next hour, the segment was devoted to women sitting on a couch, telling us how we should look, what underwear to wear to hold it all in, makeovers, and applauding those women that have lost weight. At what point do we tell our sisters "enough!"
Then, this weekend I attended the local health fair and witnessed little girls dressed up in saucy outfits, make up, and dancing with sexual moves in front of the audience. And who is beaming the most, seemingly thrilled at the sexual exploitation? The mothers. If the dancing really was about health, the dance moves would not involve sexually suggestive movements taken straight from MTV. by 8 year olds.
So, where do we go from here, sisters?
Posted by: katy Posted: 3/30/2008 7:35:18 PM I was surfing the net, looking for information regarding a project that I am working on, and I came across this site. As I read, my soul reminded me of Jeremiah 1:4-5; and God spoke to me and I was reminded that She created me complete and without reservation. She spoke to me as I read the articles, and She reminded me that I was created without mistake, and that my body is to be embraced because She loved me enough to give me this dark skin, my big legs and hands, my boyish look, my wide mid-section, and my broad shoulders, and She knew just what she was doing! God speaks in many ways, and it is always in Love.

I have been struggling with my body image since my daughter was born. It was just what I needed to hear. I hope to see more articles written by Karris. It was so beautifully written! Thank you!
Posted by: Charity (Ankeny, IA) Posted: 3/10/2008 9:14:56 AM These are comforting, encouraging words. I plan to pass this along to others who might benefit from them also. A note on the subject of "real" people in the media... while all parts of the world are caught up in the American ideal of beauty to varying extents, I have found that other countries often offer up much richer and more varied portrayals. Many British television programs, for example, often feature people who look far more "real."
Posted by: Laura (Newberg, OR) Posted: 3/7/2008 12:03:54 PM Congregation: Joyful Servant I enjoyed both Karris' and Rachel's words. I also thought the graphic was great and eye catching. Thanks to both the women for the questions that ask us to think about what we want people to notice about us first. Do I want them to notice my confidence or my butt? Got me thinking. Thanks.

We often hear the scripture from 1 Corinthians: you are the temple of God' or from 1 Samuel: 'Man looks at the physical appearance but God looks at the heart' yet they don't get to the saving grace that Christ gives. Indeed the transformation isn't in some far off place after we die, but in the mind, and seeing that God made us beautiful and good, even with our physical flaws.
Posted by: Erika (Cedar Rapids, IA) Posted: 3/7/2008 8:48:21 AM Congregation: St. Stephens Lutheran I love this article! I try to have a positive body image, but some days are harder than others. Our society "force feeds" us what a positive body image should be. The media puts many unrealistic models in magazines and on tv. Where are the REAL people? I am sad for the young men and women who try to achieve unrealistic goals to look like these models and icons. Knowing God made everyone unique can have everlasting effects on one's body image!
