Friends are a light source.
Even from afar, friends can send rays of light and/or wish for a bountiful of light.

I've known my best friend Kelly since 6th grade. There's little, if anything, that's happened since we met that I haven't shared with her, and she with me. What I've learned from our long friendship is the solace of having someone with whom I can be totally honest, with whom there are no hesitations or pretences, someone who knows me as well as I know myself.

Thanks, Amber for sharing your story of a "used to be" friendship, and the healing advice for broken hearts. I struggled with the shame you spoke of over a broken friendship with a college friend. There were good reasons for the end of the friendship, but it was easier not to talk about it with anyone. It was one of two experiences in my life with a friendship that lacked balance or health (& while intellectually stimulating, wasn't FUN). I also have two wonderful, fun-loving high school friends (Kate and Yahmini), that I'm only in contact with at Christmas. I really regret that I haven't made keeping in touch more of a priority. But I have a handful of friends who've been friends through the duration. Part of it is that it's so hard to have time to really nurture a friendship. It's another commitment -- more difficult to maintain than commitment to family, since you're often not in proximity -- or proximal activities. So I struggle, but manage to maintain links to some of those beloved friends.
