Faith Reflections
discussion questions
by the Rev. Elyse Nelson Winger
1. Read Hannah’s song
in 1 Samuel 2:1–10, and Mary’s song in Luke 1: 46–55. What verses and
phrases speak to you? What parts of their prayers could you adapt as
your own? For example, what situations in your life need to be “brought
down from their thrones"? What lowly feelings in your life need to be
“lifted up"? For what do you need to practice giving thanks? How, in
your life and relationships, might you magnify our God of peace, love,
and grace?
2. Praying into a sense
of wholeness and well-being means disciplining ourselves to bring joy
and sorrow before God, not just one or the other. Take some time to
write down or reflect on those things that are causing you grief, anger,
or fear. Do the same thing for those things that are stirring up joy,
peace, and hope. Choose one situation or feeling from each list to pray
about each day or week.
3. Where are your sanctuaries? Where do you go to connect with
divine presence? Is it your church, or a local church whose doors are
open to visitors? Is it a room in your home, a trail near your
neighborhood, a coffee shop in town? Perhaps you are not sure where a
place of Holy Spirit Spa could be for you. Take this as an invitation to
find that place and visit it at least once a week.
Go to Coffee talk and share the ways
you seek rest and renewal.
