Are you involved in advocacy of any kind? How did you begin? How was your life touched by that experience? Do you have other comments to add?

I just wanted to say I applaud all of the people working in advocacy and who posted atricles. I particularlly found Mary Nelsons section inspiring as she seems to be where I would like to be in my life in the future. As a ELCA YAGM and beginning Social Worker working in impoverished areas I have been driven to the Advocacy aspect of work in both my personal and professional life. As it has seemed to be lacking in numbers of people who are truly willing to get involved. This fall I will be going back to get my Masters in SWK and will be focusing on advocacy, I just wanted to let Mary Nelson know that she is truly an inspiration and if she has any tips on working in advocacy or getting involved to reply. Thanks and keep up the good work everyone!!!

I love Sarah Stadler-Amon's call to courage, to seek out the roots of transformation and love. And thanks for talking about Sophia, it quenches my thirst to hear her name in public.

During seminary I had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting in a colonia in Matamoras, Mexico. Those living in the colonia were asking for trash collection to be done (something we take for granted). We were asked to stay for this meeting because the residents thought our Anglo faces, not to mention our picture-taking, would help encourage the government officials to listen to their demands. And they did! By simply standing in solidarity with our brothers and sister, not by speaking for them, we were able to achieve this basic need together.

It is interesting how things coincide. In just the last month, one of my parishioners went to the Advocacy Days in D.C. She came back pumped up and ready to share her experience and to be a LOUD voice on global issues. I am thankful for her energy and willingness to help get advocacy on the charts of my congregation. As a solo pastor, sometimes it is difficult to get campaigns started unless someone else has also gotten the "bug". Thank God for people like Janet!

I've been fortunate to work for Ten Thousand Villages which is a Fair Trade Organization. Our advocacy is on-going and insures artisans in developing countries receive fair wages for their crafts.

I crossed the line between *wanting to" and "doing" advocacy with the advent of ELCA e-advocacy (check out www.elca.org/advocacy). I enter my zip code and my e-mail gets sent to my legislators. In my mind the "E" of E-Advocacy stands for "Easy," "Excellent,"and "Even I can do it."
