Author Debra Farrington has
several books about transition and discernment. Her helpful resource, Listening
to God: A Guide to Discernment, written specifically
for Women of the ELCA, is a guide to discerning what God's plan
is for each of us.
This six-part study helps
readers recognize how, with discernment, we can
hear God calling us to new action.
As part of this process,
Farrington
looks at four areas that help us to be better listeners: prayer, attention, study, and community.
Farrington
also guides us through recognizing our gifts. This is a
great exercise to do with a small group, whether it is with
your peers or a women's group. By recognizing our gifts, we
can better understand how we
can share them. By sharing our resources, we can
better find our path.

The Seasons of a Restless Heart: A Spiritual Companion For
Living in Transition, is a wonderful book about how
living in transition can be a blessing. Farrington offers spiritual
practices and stories that discuss the issue of transition
and how the reader can use these opportunities to grow
spiritually and endure changes. She writes, "That time in the wilderness is liminal time — the time between here and there, when we're
not really sure anymore who or where we are or where we're
going. Desert time is painful, but it's also alive with
creative potential." This is a great book for learning
to identify the transitions in one's life as well as
for learning to embrace these challenges and grow.
