Paper or plastic? Credit card debt can cost you more than money

Dear Reader: Not only is Café now a monthly publication, but we've made some other changes that we hope you will like. "Coffee Talk" is now an on-line discussion. The new model for "Tip Jar" is to share more information about the topic and give readers ideas on things they can do.

Pastor Sheri Delvin, writer of the "Faith Reflections" column in this issue, suggests seven things you can do to begin to live as a "passionate co-creator with God:"

1. Cut up the credit cards and get help to make a plan to get out of debt.

2. Live within your means. Every day spend 10 minutes in thoughtful thanksgiving for what God has given you make a list if that helps.

3. Ask your pastor or another person who has a deep faith to be a mentor to you as you deepen your spiritual life.

4. Go to a museum or gallery and soak up the beauty. Go to the library instead of the bookstore. Take a walk in a park or the countryside.

5. Volunteer. Volunteer as a tutor or read to the elderly, or at a soup kitchen, food pantry, shelter, or environmental organization.

6. Worship every week. It is a great place and time to remember that you are loved and you were created to love. You were not created to be a slave to things.

7. Spend your leisure time walking where you live rather than in the mall. Leave your cell phone and i-Pod at home. Pay attention to people and the landscape. Appreciate the beauty of your environment.
